A Florida couple was arrested after police found their five children living in a home without running water and feces covering the floor.
Amanda L. Dean and Joseph P. Dromeshauser, III, both 34, were living in the Sarasota home with a 17-year-old boy, 12-year-old boy, 10-year-old boy, 2-year-old boy, and 11-month-old girl.
Authorities arrived at the home on Monday to perform a welfare check, and they walked into something more grotesque than any of them could have imagined.
Animal and human feces covered the floor, several pill containers were left open within reach of the children, and the entire home smelled like urine. Trash, broken glass, and rotting food were all over the home.
A pipe used to smoke crack was found near the same area where authorities discovered the open container of pills.
Detective Megan Buck, Criminal Investigations Division, called the conditions in the home “the worst she’s ever seen”:
“The conditions in this home were the worst I’ve ever seen. No child or adult should have to live in conditions like this. Someone knew something wasn’t right with this family and called law enforcement. I’m thankful they did.”
It took police an hour to find Dean after entering her home. They eventually located her in a closet, where she had been hiding.
The children have been removed while their parents remain behind bars.
