How about a lesson in cell phone etiquette… Cell phone clutching parents, its time for YOU to go to the corner and take a time out!
Daycare centers must enforce many rules to ensure the safety of the children as well as the maintenance of a smooth, predictable routine on which children thrive. Employees must follow specific rules as well as the children attending daycare.
There are also rules that parents must follow such as being responsible for sending their child(ren) with certain meals or being prompt for drop-off and pick-up. One daycare chose to make an additional rule for parents specifically regarding pick-up that has received attention from around the world.
This particular daycare center in Texas was alarmed by the number of parents coming in to pick up their children while glued to their cell phones. They decided that a “rule” needed to be created so that the children being picked up would receive their parents’ full attention.
The rule was simple: “Get off your phone!” When Juliana Farris Mazurkewicz was picking up her children at this daycare, she was informed of this new “rule” via a sign posted on the door.
The sign shouted “Get off your phone!!” The message is underlined, in a bold font, and repeated for emphasis. The sign explained the daycare’s reasoning for posting such a strongly worded sign.
It read, “We have seen children trying to hand their parents their work they completed and the parent is on the phone. We have heard a child say ‘Mommy, mommy, mommy…’ and the parent is paying more attention to their phone than their own child. It is appalling.”
We all know how difficult it can be to put the phone down even in the presence of loved ones. Yet, some have found the sign itself to be appalling.
Almost everyone can get on board with the message behind the rather aggressive sign. Who has not found themselves regretting the amount of time spent on the phone at least once in their lives?
The wording itself struck some as the daycare shaming parents rather than politely informing them of the issue. Sabrina Wortham Brown commented on the Facebook photo of the sign and said: “My sons school (in the car rider line) has a no cell phones beyond this point sign. They definitely could have worded this one differently.”
Other parents have said that getting off of their phones is easier said than done as their jobs do not automatically end the moment they get out of the office. Yet, many have applauded the sign and will be more conscious of their cell phone usage not only at pick up, but any time they are with their children.
OMG!!! Stop your whining and be a responsible parent…
This should be a no brainer, unfortunately parents are in high demand with their jobs, their careers often over ride important decisions when it comes to their children. Parents please put the cell phone down and put things in perspective. A cell phone and a job can always be replaced, your child can not! Please make your children a priority before and after work. Employers please cut your employees some slack! Understanding and respecting the delicate balance between job and family is crucial for everyone’s bottom line!
Who cares how the sign is worded! Pass on an important message to all parents, employers and cell phone users!
Be well, be informed and be safe!
